Team Coach/Routesetter

Ryan coaches the two competitive teams at Stone Summit. As a youth and collegiate national champion himself and over 8 years of climbing experience both inside and outside, on ropes and boulders, he knows what it takes to be motivated and achieve your goals on and off the wall. Ryan is always willing to share his experience and knowledge with anybody who is eager to learn.

Ryan began climbing in central Pennsylvania where he grew up less than a mile from a small, grassroots climbing gym in a renovated barn, which is where Skerv was born. His early years spent at Climbnasium taught him that climbing is much more than competition and being the best…there is a community and support system like no other deeply rooted in the climbing culture. As a youth, Skerv loved the thrill of competing, but was also more intrinsically drawn to the outdoor climbing realm, which led him to attend college at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. At App State, Ryan studied Recreation Management and Outdoor Experiential Education. His experiential education background coupled with his passion for climbing makes him a dynamic coach who is adaptable to many different situations and learning styles.

Ryan has continued to climb both competitively and outdoors throughout the beginning of his adult life, and is always striving to reach his next level in climbing.

Some of his most memorable climbing experiences have been spending two summers and many additional trips in the New River Gorge of West Virginia repeating and establishing routes and boulders, winning both a youth and collegiate national championship, and attending the 2010 Youth Pan-American Championships in Ibarra, Ecuador. Some of his notable and memorable ascents include Kratos (V12) Boone, NC; Zenith (V12) Rumbling Bald, NC; The Lorax (V11 FA) NRG; Megamite (V11 FA) NRG; Judah (V10 FA) NRG; F5 (V10) NRG; Ten High (V10) Whiskey Springs, PA; Flesh Cycle (V9 FA) NRG; The Pinch (V4) Boone, NC; Proper Soul (5.14a) NRG; Mono Loco (5.14a) NRG; The Black Pearl (5.13d FA) NRG; Johari (5.13c FA) NRG; Immaculation (5.13c) NRG; Skylore Engine (5.13a) NRG; and Slash and Burn (5.12d) NRG. Ryan hopes to continually push himself both mentally and physically, not only through his own climbing, but also through his passion of coaching youth climbers.
